Hi there
My name is Sheree, I am new to this site - my son Joshua was born with a complete bilateral cleft lip and palate.
Josh is scheduled to have his palate repair on the 30th Nov - I was just wondering whether any one out there who has been through this as a parent has any advice/information for me about this operation? recovery time? time in hospital etc.
thanks
sheree
Hi Sheree, not long to go
Hi Sheree,
not long to go now. You must be very excited. Is he having it done at the Royal Childrens in Melbourne? If so, you're in the best possible hands - our son also had his operations done there and from what we've been told, they really are the best there.
Of course the whole thing is a bit scary but I guess that's completely normal. From what I understand it's a very a pretty straightforward procedure. The worst thing about the whole experience was the 3-day stay in the hospital (we watched a LOT of TV to pass the time) which was really exacerbated by the construction work going on right outside the ward. Oh, we also spent a fair bit of time out in the garden where the playground is.
So there's not to much to say I guess. We were there for three days which is certainly long enough to get thoroughly bored so make sure you pack a lot of toys and books.
Oh, if you're spending the nights there, you have two options - you can stay on one of those sleeper chairs (which aren't that great) or in the bed with your son (which is what my wife opted for). Can't remember, but I think she requested a wider bed or something.
As far as changes further down the line goes: he never touched a dummy again, I guess it just feld too weird. He continued using the Haberman feeder and it took about a year before we could convince him to drink from a normal bottle. Speech therapy was a big help and is highly advisable.
Anyhow, hope this comes in handy. Best regards and good luck on the 30th
John
Hi there well we survived
Hi there
well we survived the palate repair, it was done at the RCH in Melb by David Chong.
Josh is well and truly on the mend now.
you mentioned that it took your son a long time to have a normal bottle - was there a particular brand of bottle/teat that he preferred? i want to try Josh on a normal bottle and am not sure which to try, but I dont want to spend a fortune on many different types!!
thanks

Hi Sheree, how did the
Hi Sheree,
how did the operation go?
Regards,
Ole
The operation went well.
Hi there
the operation went well, he was in surgery for 4 hours, the surgeon told us he was very happy with the result.
we spent 4 nights in hospital and it took about 1 1/2 weeks before he would even try and drink milk from his bottle again!!! thankfully he has started drinking and eating well again.
the arm splints go in 1 day and i think that after this he will be much happier.
thanks
sheree
